If you own a pair of AirPods Pro earbuds or the latest AirPods Max headphones, then in the near future you could be in line for a Netflix audio upgrade-the streaming service is rumored to be working on Apple devices’ spatial audio support.

The article comes from iPhoneSoft, citing an anonymous developer of Netflix, and says that since December the feature has been in development. With a limited range of titles set to endorse spatial audio to begin with, a launch in the next few months is mooted.

Spatial audio effectively provides a more immersive surround sound environment for the uninitiated. Surround sound signals that would normally be sent to several speakers are interpreted to operate on a pair of stereo headphones instead, encoded in 5.1, 7.1, or Dolby Atmos format, with spatial indications added.

The acoustic trickery gives the appearance that certain sounds are coming from different directions, even though on either side of your head you have just two speakers. In order to experience it, you need an AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, plus an iPhone or iPad running iOS 14 or later.

Sounds good to us,
Although only one source has confirmed the upcoming spatial audio support so far, so do not treat it as a given yet, it makes sense for Netflix to support the format. With its content, Netflix also provides several surround sound requirements, so adding another will probably not be too hard.

Plus, services like Disney Plus, HBO Max, and (of course) Apple TV Plus already support spatial audio. When it comes to the features that it provides users, whether that’s spatial audio or something else, Netflix would not want to be left behind.

The end result is actually very impressive, based on the reviews we have heard since spatial audio first appeared on the AirPods Pro back in September. As advertised, it is almost like getting a full surround sound system in two earbuds.
